Contrail vortices. Shear-flow instability in jet contrails causes them to show undulations which become more extreme (showing larger amplitude) with time. Usually the instability undulations (or waves) last a few minutes after the airplane has created the contrail. After that they break up and become dipole vortices or dissipate.
