Weather Picture Of The Day launched July 4th, 2001

Think of it as sort of our "gift to the nation" on Independence Day. WPOTD is the brainchild of Anthony Watts, a television meteorologist for KHSL-TV Chico, CA and also the founder ItWorks, producer of several weather services such as WeatherWarn2000, NowCaster, Hurrwarn, SpaceWarn, WeatherShop,  TVWeather, and WeatherDish.

The idea behind WPOTD came from years of experience as a TV meteorologist where "people would just send in their weather pictures to get them on TV". In my career, I'd say I've had hundreds of unsolicited pictures sent in, just because people really enjoy taking pictures of weather phenomenon, and they like to see that work recognized. Some of the best pictures have come from amateur photographers that "just happened to be in the right place at the right time".

WPOTD is open to anyone with a camera. The only requirement is to be able to submit images electronically via email using the JPEG image format. WPOTD Images are selected by a panel of three judges and are chosen based on clarity, composition, color, and immediacy or pertinence to weather related events that are occurring (i.e. don't send us snow pictures in summer).

There are several features of WPOTD that are active and in planning:

• Free Daily PictureMail of the WPOTD picture to your Inbox
• Search Engine to locate pictures by author, date, description or keywords
• Easy to use cut and paste HTML banners to bring WPOTD images to your website and updated daily Free of course!
• Free WPOTD Severe Weather Screensaver via download, and a CD ROM version with many many more features available at a nominal cost.
• Ability to get a handsomely framed WPOTD picture certificate with your name, the date of the WPOTD, and the photo summary (still in the works)
• A monthly and yearly contest for the best WPOTD submissions, with prizes for best photo, etc. (still in the works)
• Complete Personalized Weather Forecasting Service with free email delivery of custom forecasts, weather satellite and radar imagery, and much more! (still in the works)
